Fun facts about Jupiter's red spot

Russian spy

If you've ever seen a picture of Jupiter, you have probably seen a giant red spot on the planet. But what is it? Why is it there? Is it a spy? Who is it working for? Maybe it works for Putin. Is that why it has its red color? No, nothing i just said is true, so here are some fun facts about Jupiter's red spot.

What is it?

Jupiter's red spot is a giant storm system, and it's at least 357 years old.

How did it form?

As cooler gas moves down through the atmosphere, the swirling intensifies, and it creates a storm, just like on Earth. But on Jupiter (a gas giant), there is no solid ground to slow it down. Several storms merged into each other, and together, they created the red spot.

Why is it red?

Some people think the red-ish color comes from the sunlight splitting up the chemicals in the atmosphere, so the red spot isn't actually that red.

How big is it?

Jupiter's red spot is 10,000 miles across, making it the biggest storm system in our solar system. Also, it's as large as three Earths.

Hidden depths

According to the observations of one of NASA's spacecrafts, the red spot is at least 2000 miles deep.
